'Dainty' and 'Yarmuth's Welcome,' C-J Letters

Yarmuth's Welcome
By Emily Berman, Louisville 40206

This summer I had the opportunity to participate in an internship program in Washington, D.C. I wanted to meet Rep. John Yarmuth, as he is my representative for the 3rd District. Upon my arrival, his staff was so welcoming and asked if I wanted to join them in the House Gallery while Rep. Yarmuth voted.

It was my first time going to the Capitol, so I was thrilled! I was able to attend some of his daily hearings on Education and Labor while I waited to talk to him.

After Rep. Yarmuth met with me, he asked if I would like to "shadow" him for the day! I could not believe his gracious offer because I know it is rare for congressmen to meet with their constituents in Washington due to their busy schedules.

The entire day was an educational experience. I attended his meetings with constituents, attended hearings and asked him questions about bills, the legislative process and his campaign.

Since my internship was with a non-profit organization, I had long anticipated what it was like to work on Capitol Hill and Rep. Yarmuth and his entire staff granted me the opportunity to see inside.

Dainty

First and foremost, I want to thank The Courier-Journal for the great coverage for an event that has lived through troubled years to stay alive for 38 now. Without your continuing support of the Historical Dainty Contest year after year, we would have been washed by the wayside.

As Mr. George Hauck himself said, "The reporters couldn't have done a better job reporting the conversation that he had with them. It was written so well it was if he was recorded word for word."

I hope with your continuing support each year the Historical Dainty Contest will thrive for years to come.

It is always good to have a host of great leaders attending the Dainty, from Mayor Jerry Abramson, U.S.Rep. John Yarmuth, retired U.S. Rep. Ron Mazzoli, State Rep. Jim Wayne, Sen. Tim Shaughnessy and others.

As always I love working through The Courier-Journal and its staff to make Louisville shine above all other cities in Kentucky.
