Portland Museum receives $364,000 federal grant
The Portland Museum will receive a $364,126 National Endowment for the Humanities grant to install state-of-the art climate control systems to protect its collection, U.S. Rep. John Yarmuth announced Monday.
The museum will be closed to the public, effective immediately, so that the staff can remove and safeguard the collections in its care. The museum staff expects to reopen the museum in January 2009.
Founded in 1978 in a single classroom, the museum has grown into a full-scale museum with a wide array of exhibits including costumes, paintings, drawings, books and oral histories that document the history of Portland.
The museum staff also is restoring the Squire Earick House, which some believe is the oldest house in the neighborhood.
