One Week Remains Before Voter Registration Deadline

Unregistered Kentuckians wishing to vote in November's general election have just one week to get their registration forms to their local county clerk's office. Oct. 6 is the final day to register to vote for the Nov. 4 election, and forms must be postmarked or submitted by that day.

"I encourage all citizens who have not already done so, to register to vote today," said Secretary of State Trey Grayson (R-Richwood) in a statement today warning of the deadline. "We hope to see everyone exercising their constitutional right to vote on November 4, 2008."

Registration forms can be submitted or mailed to the office of a voter's local county clerk, and more information about registration and office addresses can be found on the Secretary of State's website.

Across the country, registration booms are being reported in the run up the election. From May to Aug. 15 in Kentucky, 21,370 new Democrats registered while Republicans grew their ranks by 5,354.

Last-minute registration drives are being conducted by some politicians, including U.S. Rep. John Yarmuth (D-Louisville). Yarmuth will be on hand at a lunch-hour registration rally at the University of Louisville's Belknap Campus student activities center on Wednesday to register young voters.

At a registration event earlier this year, Yarmuth said his campaign could benefit from the registration boost, which some analysts - and Yarmuth - attributed to the presidential candidacy of U.S. Sen. Barack Obama (D-Ill.).

"We feel strongly that there are going to be many, many new voters that are going to come out for Barack, and they are going to vote for me," said Yarmuth at a Louisville event in August. "We are going to make sure we get as many new voters that we can."
