Michelle's Law Would Extend Coverage for Ill Students

Rep. John Yarmuth, D-Louisville, was in town Friday to promote a bill that would extend medical insurance coverage to college students forced to drop out due to illness.

"Michelle's Law" has passed the House and been introduced in the U.S. Senate.

Yarmuth and two students who survived cancer said the law is critical to protect people like them.

The law would give a student on his or her parents' insurance up to 12 months to continue treatment before being dropped.

"If something were to happen and I was forced to drop out, I would never get insurance because of a pre-existing condition on my own," said cancer survivor Nick Harper. "So really, I'm pushing for this and praying it comes through."

Yarmuth said if the Senate doesn't pass the bill in the next three weeks, it will have to wait until the next Congress convenes.
