House panel approves VA project funds

The U.S. House Appropriations Committee has approved $45 million to purchase land and begin preparing to build a new veterans hospital in Louisville, U.S. Rep. John Yarmuth announced today.

The new hospital - expected to cost $700 million - would replace the 57-year-old Veterans Affairs Medical Center off Zorn Avenue.

It was the only project not requested by President Bush to be included in the fiscal year 2009 Military Construction and Veterans Appropriations bill, said Yarmuth spokesman Stuart Perelmuter.

Perelmuter added that he expects the full House to vote on the bill in the coming weeks.

The Senate Military Construction and Veterans Affairs Appropriations Subcommittee is scheduled to consider its version of the legislation on July 17.
