Louisville lawmaker fulfills campaign pledge for 6th year

LOUISVILLE — Today, Congressman John Yarmuth (KY-3) held a news conference with The Center For Women and Families and Catholic Charities of Louisville to call on House Republican Leadership to bring the reauthorization of the Violence Against Women Act to the Floor for a vote and passage. It has been more than 500 days since House Republicans allowed the law to expire.

WASHINGTON, D.C. – Today, Congressman John Yarmuth (KY-3) called on House Republican Leadership to immediately bring to the Floor and approve the Violence Against Women Act (VAWA) Reauthorization, which easily passed the Senate earlier today in a bipartisan vote.

WASHINGTON – Today, Congressman John Yarmuth (KY-3) and Congresswoman Louise Slaughter (NY-25) introduced the Appalachian Community Health Emergency Act (H.R. 526), legislation that would require the first comprehensive federal study of the health dangers of mountaintop removal coal mining. The legislation would place a moratorium on all new mountaintop removal mining permits while federal officials examine health consequences to surrounding communities.

LOUISVILLE, KY  – There has never been a better time for unemployed or underemployed residents in Bullitt, Henry, Jefferson, Oldham, Shelby, Spencer and Trimble counties to start training for a career in healthcare or information technology. KentuckianaWorks, Greater Louisville’s Workforce Investment Board, is making $485,000 available in KentuckianaWorks Scholarships to fund education and training in these two high-demand career fields. The scholarships are available until June 30.

WASHINGTON, D.C. – Congressman John Yarmuth (KY-3) has introduced the Fair Elections Now Act (H.R. 269), legislation that creates a public financing system for Congressional campaigns. The bipartisan legislation, filed Tuesday with 52 original cosponsors, would enable small-dollar campaign donors to compete with special interests in Congressional elections, mitigate the effects of outside money in politics, and encourage a more diverse pool of candidates to run for federal office.
